The recently released video clip is of Brion Gysin performing “Stop Smoking” live in 1983, with musicians Ramuntcho Matta and Fred Cousseaua. They’re on stage at Theatre de la Bastille in Paris.

Watch it here:

The video has been released by Wewantsounds, a Paris based record label, that has recently reissued Junk, an album of Gysin tracks.

They write about the album that this is the “first ever reissue of Brion Gysin’s 80’s cult avant-funk classic produced in France by Ramuntcho Matta and featuring Don Cherry, Lizzy Mercier Descloux and Elli Medeiros.”

It’s the “First ever reissue of the LP in collaboration with Ramuntcho Matta. Remastered from the original Masters by Colorsound Studio. Five bonus tracks not on the original LP including two never released versions of KICK. Original artwork with 2pp insert featuring new liner notes by Brion Gysin authority Jason Weiss.”

There’s a thoughtful review of the reissued album by Jesse Dorris on Pitchfork. He calls the album version of “Stop Smoking” an “astonishing moment”.

“The lungs of the track are its circling rhythm, an Afropop-ish bop; above the beat, conch shells wheeze… Gysin battled cancer for much of his life, and his vocals here are constantly interrupted, or perhaps punctuated, by wet, racking hacks. “Stop smoking? Ha ha ha you gotta be [coughs] joking…””.
